International Day 2024

The University of Bremen invited visitors to the International Day in the Glass Hall on 27 June. Under the slogan "Herbs and spices from around the world", around 300 visitors were able to taste the Uni Curry Dip from Bremer Gewürzhandel and take part in hands-on activities such as filling lavender eye cushions and testing natural cosmetics recipes.  The henna tattoos and Arabic teas were particularly popular again this year. The international communities also took part with songs and an exhibition of international breads. The day was accompanied musically by dance performances by Sisriksha and a performance by the Stimmer band.

Botschafterbesuch aus Äthiopien an der Universität Bremen 2024

Ethiopian Ambassadors visit the University of Bremen

On Thursday, 23 May 2024, H.E. Ambassador Fekadu Beyene Ayana and H.E. Hayilay Tessema, Deputy Ambassador & Deputy Head of Mission from Ethiopia, as well as Thomas Gerkmann, Honorary Consul of Ethiopia, visited the University of Bremen. The International Office, the Institute Technology and Education and the Academy Here Ahead were involved in the meeting. After the successful exchange, the guests were given a tour of the campus.

Erasmus Staff Week 2024

Under the motto "Discover diversity at German universities!", four renowned universities in Bremen hosted the sixth Erasmus Staff Week from 22 to 26 April 2024. Colleagues from administrative departments and related areas of work at the partner universities were invited to take part in the exchange between universities.

Workshop as Part of the DAAD "Campus Initiative for International Experts" 2024

From April, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) will be supporting over 100 universities across Germany in training international students as future specialists and has selected 114 projects as part of the "International Experts Campus Initiative". A total of around 120 million euros in funding from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) is available for this initiative until 2028. The International Office and Here Ahead from Bremen took part in two workshops at the kick-off event for FIT and Profi Plus organised by the DAAD, which was attended by representatives from politics and business.

kompass Community Workshop 2024

The kompass Community Workshop took place on 15/16 March 2024:  International students from 10 countries and the kompass team prepared for International Day (27 June 2024) and used practical tasks/presentations to deepen their knowledge of project and time management.

Welcoming the international exchange students 2024

The University of Bremen welcomed around 80 international exchange students on Monday, 11 March. A welcome breakfast gave them the opportunity to get to know each other and gain an initial insight into life at the University of Bremen. In addition to Vice President Dr Mandy Boehnke, the International Office, the Language Centre and the Erasmus Initiative were also represented.  After breakfast, the students were given a tour on campus.

42nd Annual Conference for International Students organised by the DAAD at the University of Bremen

180 university employees from International Offices all over Germany met in Bremen on 29 February and 1 March. The University of Bremen hosted the annual "International Students" conference organised by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).

DAAD-Preis für Paria Moraghebi und Konrektorin für Internationalität, wissenschaftliche Qualifizierung und Diversität, Dr. Mandy Boehnke

DAAD Prize for Paria Moraghebi

Student Paria Moraghebi has received the DAAD prize for outstanding achievements by foreign students at German universities. The Iranian was honoured for her high level of social commitment and her academic achievements. The Prize is endowed with 1,000 euros.

University fair "Study and Internship abroad" 2023

From 22 to 23 November, the university fair "Study and Internship Abroad" took place once again, where students and academics from Bremen had the opportunity to obtain comprehensive information about various programmes abroad. This year also marked the opening of the Student Lounge for the first time, where students from Bremen had the opportunity to exchange information about their experiences abroad with "Student Ambassadors".

Annual Reception for International Researchers

On September 20, 2023, Fraunhofer MEVIS hosted a reception for guest scientists, with approximately 100 attendees. The event was meticulously coordinated by the U Bremen Research Alliance/Welcome Center. Dr. Mandy Boehnke, Vice President, and Prof. Dr. Matthias Günther, Deputy Institute Director of the Fraunhofer Institute, extended warm welcomes to the guests. In addition to a variety of beverages, two food trucks served delectable cuisine, enhancing the overall experience. The afternoon was further enriched by a musical performance by the "Stimmer Band," engaging games, and a dedicated children's area.

This winter semester, the University of Bremen welcomed a total of 150 exchange students. The international students were welcomed at the Newcomer Desk and greeted with an extensive welcome breakfast in the university canteen.

In September, an international working group led by Marjke Baethge-Assenkamp, Head of the International Office, and Prof Kelm from Faculty 2 came together to discuss the topic of One Health. Among the participants were representatives from Tanzania, Ghana, Chad and Cameroon.

Visit of the Dickinson College and participation in GAIN in Boston

In August, President Prof Dr Jutta Günther and the Head of the International Office, Dr Marejke Baethge, visited Dickinson College in Pennsylvania. The long-standing partner university has exciting realisations, especially on the topic of sustainability. For example, the two visited the Dickinson Farm, where crops are grown, taught and researched. Prof Günther and Dr Baethge then met with Prof Michal Kucera, Vice President for Research and Transfer, Dr Julia Sievers, Head of Department Academic Affairs and Dr Imke Girßmann, BYRD at GAIN. The GAIN organises an annual conference at which internationally mobile scientists from Germany exchange ideas with numerous representatives from the German scientific landscape, politics and industry. The conference passes panel discussions, workshops and lectures on the international scientific landscape and career opportunities in Germany.

Cardiff Besuch 2023

Visit from Cardiff University

On 6 and 7 July 2023, a delegation from Cardiff University visited us at the University of Bremen. Among other members of Cardiff University was the designated President, Prof Wendy Larner. Together with Vice President Dr Mandy Boehnke and Vice President Prof Michal Kucera, they visited the MARUM Centre. The University of Bremen has long-standing research cooperation with the University of Cardiff in various fields. Students also benefit from the Bremen-Cardiff Alliance, which was founded in 2019. Exchange places are available in various subjects.

Open Worlds – Share Knowledge! - OPEN CAMPUS of the University of Bremen

The OPEN CAMPUS took place on the campus of the University of Bremen on June 23rd + 24th, 2023.

The OPEN CAMPUS started on Saturday afternoon. In the approximately 35 information tents, the visitors could inform themselves about the various study programs, research projects and offers of the university. The International Office also presented itself, together with the Academy HERE Ahead. In the Pagoda, there were information booths as well as an Arabic lounge with tea and pastries, which was very well received. This was followed by the big live concert with GENTLEMAN.

Research Ambassador Workshop

On Wednesday, 27. August 2023, the President Prof. Jutta Günther and the Vice President for International Affairs, Academic Qualification, and Diversity Dr. Mandy Boehnke welcomed the Research Ambassadors to the University of Bremen. They invited them to share their experiences of the last few years. Among other things, the Covid pandemic and its impact on academic life were discussed. This was followed by some workshops on communication and social media, as well as sustainability. On Friday, the leaders of the U Bremen Research Alliance, the Alumni Network, YUFE and BYRD - Bremen Early Career Researcher Development invited to an exchange. The Open Campus on Saturday then marked the end of the successful workshop.

On June 16, our President Prof. Dr. Jutta Günther and Barbara Hasenmüller, Erasmus university coordinator, visited the University of Groningen. During the inaugural visit, a new memorandum of understanding was signed by Prof. Günther and Prof. Jouke de Vries, President of the Board.

NAFSA Marejke und Mandy

NAFSA Conference 30 May - 2 June 2023

NAFSA, the world's largest association for international education and exchange, hosted the 75th NAFSA Annual Conference and Expo. The Vice President for International Affairs, Academic Qualification, and Diversity, Dr Mandy Boehnke, and the Head of the International Office, Dr Marejke Baethge, represented the University of Bremen there. Beforehand, Ms Boehnke and Ms Baethge visited the University of Guelph in Canada to talk about the existing cooperation and to agree on new projects.

Jeden Mittwoch im Semester von 16.00 Uhr bis 18:00 Uhr treffen sich internationale Wissenschaftler:innen und Doktorand:innen in der Etage 2a der Cafeteria im GW 2. Am 24. Mai war Frau Dr. Mandy Boehnke, Konrektorin für Internationalität, wissenschaftliche Qualifizierung und Diversität, zu Gast bei dem Café International und hat sich mit den Besuchern unterhalten.

Visit of the Dickinson College - New Red Chairs on Campus

On April 27, two new Dickinson chairs were formally dedicated on campus. The chairs were placed on campus as a token of the more than 30-year partnership between Dickinson College and University of Bremen beginning in 2015. The new bright red chairs found their place in front of the Galileo Residence. Prof. Dr. Jutta Günther, President University of Bremen and Samantha Brandauer, Dickinson College inaugurated the two chairs.

On Thursday, April 27, 2023, at 6:00 pm, the University of Bremen hosted in cooperation with RTG Contradiction Studies and the University of Guelph, Canada a guest lecture on "Legacies of War: Historical Research on Underwater Munitions" by Dr. Alex Souchen. Welcome Event for international Freshmen

On April 14, Dr. Marejke Baethge-Assenkamp, Head of the International Office and Dr. Mandy Boehnke, the Vice President for International Affairs, Academic Qualification, and Diversity welcomed all new international students of the university of Bremen. The event offered a wide range of possibilites to get together with some cake and coffee. Moreover the new students got the chance to get some household goods at the free shop to start well in the upcoming semester in Bremen.
