Collaborative Research Centres

The German Research Foundation (DFG) funds several Collaborative Research Centers (CRC) at the University of Bremen. In these long-term university-based research institutions, researchers work together within an interdisciplinary research program.

Central Research Development Fund

The University’s Central Research Development Fund (CRDF) offers funding for all career stages. Different CRDF funding schemes explicitly invite proposals for collaborative initiatives and interdisciplinary exploration projects.

Research Cooperation in the Region

Non-university research institutes

University of Bremen researchers cooperate in numerous projects with partner research institutes on the campus and elsewhere in the state of Bremen. These include the affiliated institutes according to § 96 BremHG, the institutes organized in the Association for the Advancement of Science (Verein zur Förderung der Wissenschaft), and the top-level research institutes funded by the state of Bremen that have united to form the “U Bremen Research Alliance”, to which the University of Bremen also belongs.

Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg

The University of Bremen cooperates closely with the Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg (HWK) in Delmenhorst, near Bremen. The HWK is an independent institute for advanced study and is supported by the federal states of Bremen and Lower Saxony. In fields corresponding to those of the universities of Bremen and Oldenburg, the HWK promotes disciplinary and interdisciplinary cooperation among internationally renowned research personalities and early-career researchers, who come as fellows to the HWK for extended research stays.

Cooperation Professorships

Co-operation professors – more than 50 at the University of Bremen – underscore and consolidate the close cooperation between the University and its partner non-university research institutes. They teach at the University, conduct joint research, and independently supervise master and doctoral theses.
