Information for Candidates for Appointment
Appointment Offer
The appointment offer is issued by the Rector of the University of Bremen (in the case of cooperative professorships by the Senator for Environment, Climate and Science). With the appointment offer, a request is made to start the appointment negotiations.
Preparation of the Appointment
After the appointment is offered, the applicant will receive a proposed date for the appointment negotiation and further information regarding the procedure and further steps to be taken.
In preparation of the appointment negotiations, the candidate is asked to submit a concept of future teaching and research activities, including the required staffing and further resources. Candidates are usually advised by the dean in advance, also in order to match the concept with the faculty. In addition to the concept, the candidate should transmit his or her expectations regarding salary as well as a current salary certificate in a separate document.
If you would like to receive support from the Dual Career Welcome Service of the University of Bremen, it is very helpful to include a note to this effect in your documents.
If the professorship is a tenure track professorship, the evaluation criteria will also be defined with the candidate prior to the appointment negotiations. For this purpose, the dean of the faculty will contact the candidate.

The Appointment Negotiations
The appointment negotiations usually take place in the premises of the Rectorate in the administration building of the University of Bremen. You can find the administration building on the site plan of the University of Bremen. As a rule, the appointment hearing first discusses the equipment of the professorship and then personal matters (e.g. salary, dual career).
Further information on the procedure of appointment negotiations at the University of Bremen can be found in our Guidelines for Appointment Negotiations, which can be accessed here.
Seal of Approval for Appointment Negotiations
The German Association of University Professors and Lecturers (DHV) has awarded the University of Bremen the seal of approval for fair and transparent appointment negotiations for a further five years. This means the university has successfully passed the re-audit procedure for the second time.
The re-audit procedure is based on the quality seal procedure. Its main basis is a weighted questionnaire with 42 questions as well as additional special re-audit questions that the DHV has developed on the basis of its consulting experience in appointments procedures. The evaluation of the University of Bremen focused on fairness, appreciation, transparency, and reliability in appointment negotiations and renegotiations of professorships. Statements from the reviewed university were also incorporated into the evaluation. In addition, there were interviews with professors appointed to the University of Bremen about their experiences in the appointments procedure and the experience of the DHV legal advisers was also taken into consideration.
