The University of Bremen is offering – under the condition of job release – a fulltime position as

Lecturer with Tenure-Track to Senior Lecturer (f/m/d)

in the Institute of Sociology at the Faculty of ”Social Sciences” starting at the October 1, 24 for the field of

Qualitative Methods of Empirical Social Research.

Job description

At the University of Bremen’s Institute of Sociology (IfS), you will be welcomed by a team distinguished by its scientific excellence, orientation towards the future, and global interconnectedness. Our work focuses on topics such as social inequality, integration and the transformation of social structures, all supported by a broad pluralism of theories and methodologies. With these focal points, the IfS is a pivotal element of the SOCIUM Research Institute for Inequality and Social Policy. The study programs of the IfS aim for a broad-based undergraduate education. Our research and teaching methods integrate both quantitative and qualitative approaches, along with the latest techniques of (social) data science. As a member of our institute, you will contribute to the further development of our study programs, which are characterized by a sound education in various sociological fields.

The position advertised here offers you a predictable and transparent path to a permanent academic position as part of our department. Initially, the appointment is limited to four years (salary group 14 TV-L). The employment is regulated by the Act of Academic Fixed-Term Contract, §2 (1) (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz – WissZeitVG). Therefore, candidates may only be considered for appointment if they still have the respective qualification periods available in accordance with § 2 (1) WissZeitVG. The permanent position of a Senior Researcher (salary group 15 TV-L) can be assigned in case of proof of outstanding aptitude, performance and competence after successful completion of an evaluation. This full-time position enables you to independently perform your duties in research and academic teaching within the framework of the Bremen Higher Education Act (§ 24). The teaching responsibilities are eight weekly hours per semester in the position as Lecturer and twelve weekly hours as Senior Lecturer.

Your tasks and responsibilities:

  • Teaching courses in the Bachelor's and Master's degree programs in sociology and related subjects that cover the qualitative methods of empirical sociological research in their entirety (collection of qualitative observation and interview data; both more content-analytical and more interpretative or reconstructive analytical methods; different types of data, e.g. text data, visual data, social media data).
  • The willingness to contribute to other areas of methods training in the BA program and to offer courses in English is expected. The use of new media-supported forms of learning is desirable. Participation in the concept of "research-based learning" is expected.
  • Participation in graduate training at the BIGSSS.
  • Participation and cooperation in the joint curriculum development of the sociological BA/MA degree programs, especially in methods of empirical social research; development of innovative teaching formats in methods training, taking into account the interlinking with sociological topics and theories.
  • Research (publication activities, organization of conferences/workshops, active participation in the acquisition of third-party funding) with the aim of further qualification.
  • Collaboration in research, teaching and transfer in interdisciplinary contexts (including within the SOCIUM - Research Center on Inequality and Social Policy and the research data center Qualiservice)
  • Participation in academic self-administration, including module development and administration, as well as a willingness to actively contribute to the Institute for Sociology (e.g., support of Erasmus students).

Requirements

  • Above-average academic university degree (typically a Master's degree in sociology, or comparable qualification)
  • Relevant, outstanding doctorate in sociology or a related subject of more recent date
  • Several years of teaching experience in qualitative methods of empirical social research
  • Willingness to participate in professional training programs for higher education faculty
  • Openness for the integration of qualitative and quantitative methods
  • Language competence in German at C1 level (CEFR/CEFR)

Further are desirable:

  • Very high communicative competence, ability to work in a team
  • Confident command of contemporary forms of media and presentation in teaching
