40 Years of Quantum Dots: From The Beginnings to Applications and The Nobel Prize
The talk will give an overview on the development of quantum dots, which originates from different scientific disciplines. This includes photo catalysis, radiation chemistry, optics and cluster research. Curiosity-driven research activities focused on size quantization effects for about two decades and quantum dots became a visible role model for the quantum mechanical particle-in-the-box treatment. Progress in the field was always accompanied by the development of advanced wet-chemical synthetic protocols allowing precise control over size and shape of the nanocrystals and their production in kilogram scale. Since about two decades materials- and life science applications in the fields of optoelectronics and molecular imaging came up. One of the most prominent examples is their use in tv-screens with unique color and brightness properties
