Research

In a statement, the Senate of the German Research Foundation (DFG) stressed the importance of taking sex, gender, and diversity into account in research projects.

Sex, gender, and diversity may be relevant in regards to researchers, persons under study, individuals affected by the implementation of research results, animals under study, and/or with regard to samples taken from humans or animals. The statement of the Senate of the German Research Foundation notes that taking sex, gender, and diversity analysis into account in the preparation and implementation of research projects is part of good research practice and anchored in the DFG’s 2019 Code of Conduct Guidelines for Safeguarding Good Research Practice.

“We believe it is important to encourage researchers to reflect on sex and gender dimensions and diversity dimensions in their research work, as they are relevant in many instances,” says DFG President Professor Dr. Katja Becker. “However, we also understand that the relevance of sex, gender, and diversity varies depending on the research context, subject area, and methods, which is why this information need only be provided as it pertains to the proposed research.”

The German Research Foundation (DFG) has created a website on the Relevance of Sex, Gender, and Diversity in Research

Their webpage on Diversity in the Research System is available here.

The German Research Foundation’s forschung (03/2017) magazine includes six pages on the topic of diversity (in German only).

Gender Consulting for Research Alliances

The University of Bremen pursues the consistent embedding of gender equity in research alliances. The Equal Opportunities Office offers professional advice and support for the entire process from the application to the implementation of equal opportunity concepts – also with a view to other diversity dimensions such as social and ethnic origin, age, sexual identity, or physical ability. The Equal Opportunities Office develops customized offers for different target groups, uses synergies by bundling measures, networks with other university services, and paves the way for a sustainable implementation of equal opportunity concepts.
