Research Internship

In the third semester, students further broaden their horizon either by leaving Bremen for a semester abroad or a research internship or by taking additional courses in other Master’s programs at the University of Bremen (e.g. MA Political Science, MA European Politics, or MA Social Policy). Students can choose the research internship in order to gain experience in research institutions. Such institutions can be purely academic or do applied social sciences like in consultancies, political foundations or think tanks in any world region. With the consent of the module coordinator, the internship can also be done in political institutions (political parties, public administration, NGOs, etc.), if it aims, for example, at gaining access to a research field or data collection for the MA thesis in the fourth semester. The research internship can be carried out in Germany or abroad, depending on the possibilities. It is strongly recommended that you conclude an internship contract with the institution in which the tasks, working hours and remuneration are precisely defined.

The internship comprises a total of 18 CP of the MAIR program. It is part of the IR-8 module. The internship is not graded, but you must submit an internship report.

The planned internship must be approved by the module coordinator (Prof. Schlichte) before the internship begins. Electronic registration via PABO is not required, registration is done directly with the module coordinator via the registration form.

Internship abroad

An internship abroad is a very good alternative or supplement to studying abroad, as you gain practical work experience and get to know the working world of a foreign country at the same time. This also helps you to develop new perspectives for the rest of your studies. As an (international) internship is often unpaid, you can apply for scholarship programs to help cover the costs incurred. Please find out about the application deadlines early on, which are often one year before departure.

You will find a selection of different funding opportunities here. If you have any further questions, please contact Barbara Hasenmüller.
