Auslands-BAföG

"Auslands-BAföG"

Many students can receive a grant for studying abroad for one year. Students are entitled to a grant if their education abroad is conducive to their level of education (basic knowledge from at least one year of study in Germany), if they can prove that they have sufficient knowledge both of the language of the country and the language of instruction and if their stay abroad lasts at least six months or, in the case of university cooperation programmes and internships, at least three months. As the financial requirements for a stay abroad can be higher (travel costs, tuition fees, foreign supplement) than for studying in Germany, students who are not entitled to BAföG for their studies in Germany may also be entitled to BAföG when studying abroad. You can find more information on the latter d here. Please note: Verifiable tuition fees are currently (as of February 2021) covered up to an amount of 4,600 euros and do not have to be paid back. You should apply for funding at least six months before the start of your trip at the relevant education funding office. Here you can find the addresses of the relevant international offices.
