Dr. Enrique Uribe-Jongbloed (Cardiff University, UK and Universidad Externado de Colombia)

We are pleased to welcome our colleague Dr. Enrique Uribe-Jongbloed at the Historic Institute and the Center for Media, Communication and Information Research at the University of Bremen from 14.04. to 2.05.2024, as part of the Bremen-Cardiff Alliance strategic partnership.

After a BA in Film and TV Studies at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia, Dr. Enrique Uribe finished his Master at the BTU Cottbus and successfully pursued a PhD at Aberystwyth University. He currently teaches at the School of Journalism, Media and Culture at Cardiff University.

His research focuses on the intersection of media, identity and language. It is at this crossroads that he has become interested in how media products have represented historical processes and events, as well as how they have drawn upon history to build their narratives and connect cultural tradition, heritage, and storytelling to lure their audiences. Whether it is video games, comics, graphic novels, minority language media production or Latin American telenovelas, Dr. Enrique Uribe studies how these constructions of symbolic identity shape social understanding of contemporary and historic issues.

This interdisciplinary interplay of media production, identity, and history is what brings him to visit University of Bremen and Prof. Dr. Delia González de Reufels with the Latin American History working group, to exchange experiences, perspectives, and methodologies for the study of these intersections. A special interest lies in the most recent history of Colombia which is why Dr. Uribe will be part of the seminar on Colombian history of the 1980s during his stay in Bremen.
