Abstract: As 2025 dawns, Europe is facing clear signs of the growing power of right-wing political parties. These trends, while predictable, are cause for much worry. At the same time, it is important to remember that Europe is only belatedly following much wider global trends which have seen both the rise and strong pushback against right-wing movements. The key challenge, then, is to focus on this tension and to gather strength for the political work needed, both at our universities and beyond. Moderated by Teresa Koloma Beck, this panel discussion brings together experts who work on authoritarianism, violence, conflict, democracy, and state-movement dynamics in India, Turkey, Poland and beyond to ask: How are we to understand the rise of various right-wing movements in different part of the world, and what can Germany learn from the past and ongoing work of the Left in these various locations?
