Abstract:
This talk is about how inland navigation skippers and operators are influenced by and experience maritime ports, waters, and professional power distribution. My ethnographic fieldwork shows, that altough they are frequent guests and are elementary to how the Antwerp and Rotterdam port function, they remain outsiders. This contrast is productive as it shows what is ‘maritime’ about ‘maritime shipping’.
