University of Bremen Illustration

The newly founded Bremen Blue Humanities Research Group further develops the burgeoning field of the Blue Humanities with a focus on Anglophone colonial histories, postcolonial modernities, cultures, knowledges, literatures, and films. As one of the former major German port cities, an ancient Hanse city and a major city serving German colonial interests, and a hub for global trade located close to the North Sea as well as a center for marine, polar, and climate sciences, Bremen is an excellent location to critically study various issues and questions emerging within the field of Blue Humanities. This research field studies oceans, rivers, coastal areas and other bodies of water in terms of (colonial) histories, migration and travel, sustainability and ecological issues, circulation of people and ideas, marine and Indigenous knowledges, literature and cultures, new geographies, extractivism, energy and economic issues, among others.
