40 Years University of Bremen in a Book

From the grass-roots democratic experiments of the »Bremen Model« to the recent successes in the “Excellence Initiative for Top-level Research at German Universities” – the University of Bremen is no stranger to change. In his new book “Universität Bremen – 40 Jahre Bewegung” [The University of Bremen – 40 Years of Ongoing Change], Peter Meier-Hüsing looks back over the past four decades: not sparing with his criticism, he also writes with empathy and humor.
In the period before it was founded, there was a great deal of debate and heated dispute about how the University was to be financed and what orientation it should adopt. During an inauguration ceremony held in the City Hall on 14th October 1971, Hans Koschnick, the then Mayor of Bremen, handed over the symbolic keys of the University to its founding Rector, Thomas von der Vring. In his book “The University of Bremen – 40 Years of Ongoing Change”, Peter Meier-Hüsing provides answers to many questions. For example: How did the University manage to assert itself in the founding years? How did it implement the proposed ideas? Furthermore, the author repeatedly examines how the University was perceived from those outside and in other parts of Germany. And he also describes how staff and students coped with the transitions that made the University what it is today.
