The Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) [German Research Foundation] has once more placed the University of Bremen at the top of its research-oriented standards of gender equality (Stage 4). A DFG working group has been evaluating the implementation of gender mainstreaming at German universities. In 2013, a total of 68 universities submitted their final reports, containing strategies, structures, and details of their efforts to strengthen equality between the genders. The working group reached their assessment based on a comprehensive report with differentiated statistics. Stage 4 entails the continuation of the University of Bremen’s successful approach, which will now be complemented by further innovative advancements. The DFG is pleased to see that policies and structures of gender mainstreaming have become firmly established at the University of Bremen. Special praise was reserved for the many programs dedicated to the advancement of women in all stages of their career, and for facilitating access for women to the sciences and engineering disciplines. The working group picked out the targeted collaboration between the different faculties and the University management as examples of good practice. The DFG also commended the University’s use of funds deriving from the Excellence Initiative to set up its own female professor program.
The University of Bremen’s Vice Rector for Research and Young Researchers, Professor Kurosch Rezwan, commented on the result by pointing out that “The DFG evaluation is a decisive factor in determining the allocation of Excellence Initiative funding for graduate schools, collaborative research centers, and research training groups”. He went on to say that “our excellent performance in the area of gender mainstreaming will in future continue to play an important role in attracting third-party funding and consolidating the University of Bremen’s impressive record in this respect."
