The EU project AI4Ed explores the future of education in Lisbon – DSC supports third joint project meeting

Held on 7 and 8 November, the meeting served as a platform for the six partner organizations to delve into the project's progress and set the course for the future of education. Our data steward Heike Thöricht supported the meeting with her expertise in making the project’s data FAIR.

The bustling city of Lisbon played host to the third two-day project meeting of AI4Ed, a groundbreaking initiative funded by Erasmus+ and committed to challenging traditional teaching-learning processes.

Exploring Novel Technologies and Pedagogies

AI4Ed is not merely a project; it is a vision to reshape education by incorporating cutting-edge technologies, particularly artificial intelligence (AI), and innovative pedagogies. The Lisbon meeting was a testament to this vision, focusing on developing tools, methodologies, and evaluation systems that respond to the evolving reality of education.

Key Topics of the 2-Day Event:
  • Launching the First Use Case at IMH Campus: The highlight of the meeting was the initiation of the first use case at IMH Campus. Partners actively engaged in discussions around data generation for training, laying the groundwork for building AI models in the future. While IMH took the lead, others are gearing up in the starting blocks, preparing for the transformative journey ahead.
  • Capacity Building for Teachers and Students: Recognizing the pivotal role of educators and learners in the AI-powered educational landscape, the meeting delved into the crucial topic of capacity building. Partners focused on preparing training modules covering a spectrum of subjects, including Artificial Intelligence, Ethics, Project Key Performance Indicators, AI Models, Data Management and Active Teaching. These modules aim to equip teachers and students with the knowledge and skills needed to navigate the future of education seamlessly.

Our data steward Heike Thöricht supported the joint meeting by sharing her expertise and contributing to the objective of making the AI4Ed project’s data FAIR. During the 2-day event, Heike presented an approach on developing a learning unit on the topic of “Data formats” and “Data management plans” for work package 4 of the project (more information on the WPs can be found here). In addition, she made the participants aware of the need to update the data management plan regularly and showed the possibilities of Zenodo as a repository for making the research data and other outputs (e.g. the created learning materials) FAIR.

Looking Forward: A Glimpse into the Future Steps

As AI4Ed enters the next phase of its journey, the project partners are poised for significant milestones:

  • Further Development of Use Cases:Building on the success of the IMH Campus use case launch, partners are actively working on advancing other use cases. These initiatives aim to demonstrate the practical applications of AI in diverse educational settings.
  • Continuous Capacity Building: The preparation of training modules is an ongoing effort, with a focus on ensuring that teachers and students are well-prepared for the transformative impact of AI. The modules are designed to not only impart knowledge but also instill ethical considerations in AI education.
  • Collaboration and Knowledge Sharing: The spirit of collaboration and knowledge sharing remains at the forefront of AI4Ed's approach. Partners are actively engaging with each other to share insights, challenges, and best practices, fostering a dynamic community dedicated to the common goal of reshaping education.

As AI4Ed moves forward, its commitment to innovation, collaboration, and the integration of AI and pedagogical advancements continues to chart the course for a future where education is not just a process but a dynamic, adaptive, and inclusive experience.
