For Freshers: Turbulent Semester Start Plus Official Welcoming and Party

For many freshers the semester start was a spontaneous and rushed affair – not only for those taking up their studies at the University of Bremen. At universities all over Germany, the shortened length of attendance leading to the school leaving examination (Abitur) and abolition of the draft and mandatory social service resulted in considerable delays in the enrollment process, sometimes even up to shortly before the freshers’ week. In the meantime lecture courses have commenced. A total of 5,500 new students have been admitted to the various Bachelors and Masters programs on offer at the University of Bremen – including 2,800 freshers for whom the information and counseling sessions were particularly interesting and important.

The freshers’ week is first and foremost a service to help new students cope with their new environment and get off to a good start at the University. A traditional highlight is the official welcoming ceremony held for new students in the Theater am Goetheplatz. The event encompasses a cultural program performed by the best the University has to offer, interesting guest speakers, and one or two brief speeches. For the first time, the event is being organized not only for students but also by the students themselves. The entertaining program has been put together by 15 students attending the course "Event Management in Practice" under the leadership of Malte Prieser. The list of guests is promising and varied: the Ukulele Choir, gun-slinging singer Johannes Strate, the Indie-Band Dashwoods, and short addresses by the Mayor of Bremen, Jens Böhrnsen, and the University Vice-Rector for Academic Teaching and Studies, Prof. Heidi Schelhowe. Afterwards the fun begins in Moments club: a great opportunity for partying and making friends.

The event will take place on Friday 18th November 2011 at 7.00 p.m. (admittance 6.30 p.m.) in the Theater am Goetheplatz. At 10.00 p.m. the party takes off in the Moments Club (address: Vor dem Steintor 65). Admission: 2 euros for the Goethetheater, 4 euros for the party, combi-tickets 5 euros. Tickets are already on sale at lunchtimes in the Glass Hall and in building GW 2.
