Honorary Doctorate for U.K. Preuß

Legal scholar and political scientist, Professor Ulrich K. Preuß, is one of the most prominent builders of bridges between the two disciplines. The Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Bremen has now awarded him an honorary doctorate in recognition of his outstanding academic career and contribution to combining theory with practice.

From 1972 to 1996, Preuß was Professor of Public Law in the Law Faculty of the University of Bremen. During this time he built up a career marked by outstanding scholarly contributions to the theory of politics, the theory of the state, the constitution and legal theory, as well as jurisprudence. In 1996 he moved to the Free University of Berlin, where he accepted an appointment as Professor of Public Law and Politics at the Otto Suhr Institute of Political Science. From 2005 till 2010 he was Professor of State Theory at the Hertie School of Governance in Berlin.

Preuß received the honorary doctorate especially for his achievements in the field of Political Science. The laudatory speech underscored the fact that he had managed to combine two fields in one person, “without in any way sacrificing his legal depth of focus or his productivity in political science”.

U.K. Preuß was also applauded for his notable commitment in the area of university reform. Here, he made both valuable theoretical as well as practical contributions. His work in the areas of teaching and the advancement of young researchers has left a lasting mark on the education of generations of Bremen jurists and political scientists. His legal expertise often led to the resolution of pressing political issues.
