“Academic best practice in the humanities and social sciences” is the topic of a panel discussion being organized by the Research Academy ProUB at the University of Bremen on Wednesday 26th January. In view of the increasing incidence of academic wrong behavior, the German Research Foundation (DFG) has developed a catalogue of proposals for “Safeguarding good academic practice”. These proposals will be presented and discussed, taking into account the specifics of research and doctoral studies in the social sciences and the humanities. The panel discussion addresses doctoral students and students at advanced levels of study, as well as graduates, supervisors and anyone else who is interested in the topic.

Prof. Sabine Broeck (confident in cases of suspicion of academic wrong behavior, FB 10) and Dr. Werner Dressel (Executive Secretary BIGSSS) will pay particular attention to the following questions: What are the typical breaches of rules? What are the pros and cons of structured doctoral programs with regard to best academic practice? How do the principles of best academic practice relate to the general criteria of academic research?
The issue will be dealt with openly, also referring to past cases, and participants will be encouraged to put forward their points of view. The border between correct and incorrect behavior will be a special focus of discussion. Additionally, advice will be given on what to do when suspicion of wrong behavior arises.

The panel discussion will be held in English and German. Prior registration is not necessary. The symposium begins at 4.00 p.m. in building GW1 (A0010), and ends at 6.00 p.m..
