Girl power at the University of Bremen – for once again this year two summer universities are being held for women in the engineering and computer sciences. One of these events, Informatica Feminale, is celebrating its 15th birthday: This year’s Informatica Feminale from 20th till 31st August will be open to university students from all subjects as well as any interested persons who would like to participate. It is expected that some 200 attendees will follow the invitation.
Three weeks of summer studies in Bremen
The 4th engineer’s summer university, which is already underway (13th till 24th August), and the Informatica Feminale are open to students and experts alike. Altogether there are some 70 courses on offer in the thematic fields of the engineering and computer sciences – covering introductory courses, foundation courses, and special topics. The program is rounded off by workshops surrounding the topic of careers. The focus is not only on an exchange of ideas between people working in the two fields but also on networking among technically-minded women. The agendas include lectures, workshops, and seminars held by university teaching staff and practitioners. In some courses the language of delivery is English, and participants are able to obtain certificates of attendance as well as credit points.
JobForum and Women MINT Slam on 22nd August 2012
On 22nd August there will be a ring lecture and a JobForum. Highlight of the two summer universities is the second Women-MINT-Slam, at which participants present entertaining accounts of their work activities and research results obtained in the MINT areas. At the end of the day, the winner of the Women-MINT-Slam is chosen by a jury. The Women-MINT-Slam event is organized by the National Pact for Women in MINT Careers ‚Komm, mach MINT’. Background
The Engineer’s Summer University and Informatica Feminale are organized by the Competence Center for Women in the Sciences and Engineering, a joint institutional body supported by all the science and engineering faculties of the University of Bremen. The summer universities are supported financially with funds from the Female Professor Program. The concept is the brainchild of the University of Bremen. It has already been successfully transferred to several different countries, and it received the accolade “innovative best-practice project” in the area of engineering sciences from the EU. The Informatica Feminale has been taking place each year since 1997, with participants coming from all over Germany. The Engineer’s Summer University is based on the Informatica Feminale concept and was started in 2005.
