From 12th January till 26th February 2012, the Haus der Wissenschaft will be hosting an exhibition of photos to mark the 40th anniversary of the University of Bremen.
Student protests in front of the City Hall, University Sport for everyone, the Children’s University, the Hollerstadt Project, Open Day, start of streetcar line 6, study prizes and endowed professorships – the 40-year-old relationship between the people of Bremen and their University has been a particularly varied one. From the outset, it was clear that the University would have to be closely associated with the town itself, in many different ways. It inevitably impacts urban planning and public transport, as well as the whole sector of education and research. But the pathway was anything but a smooth one. Intensive general interest when the University was founded in 1971 was followed by a phase of alienation on the part of large segments of the population. It took many years for the University – and therefore the whole area of science – to find its way to the heart of Bremen. Today, though, the town pins its hopes for future development to a great extent on the University of Bremen. The photo exhibition features 40 snapshots of the exciting and sometimes dramatic association between the town of Bremen and the University of Bremen.
The exhibition will be officially opened in the Haus der Wissenschaft at 6 p.m. on 12th January 2012. Following an opening address by Dr. Klaus Sondergeld (Economic Development Board Bremen), Sigrid Dauks (Uni-Archiv) will talk about the concept behind the exhibition. Guest speaker is Prof. Jürgen Timm, who as University Rector between 1982 and 2002 played a major role in the development of the University and its relations with the town. Members of the press and all interested persons are cordially invited to attend.
Parallel to the exhibition, two talks will also be held in the Haus der Wissenschaft. On 24th January 2012 at 7 p.m. Robert Lemmen (urban planner for the university) will speak on the concepts and planning behind the building of the University of Bremen in a lecture entitled “The University of Tomorrow”. Another lecture will be given by Dr. Birte Gräfing (historian) on the topic “The Bremen Student’s Budget – Reflections on Student Life between Reeducation and Rebellion”: this will be on 16th February 2012, starting at 7.30p.m.
