AddSense
Outline:
The project Addsense is focusing on the local fabrication of sensor structures by additive manufacturing like printing, in order to build up material integrated sensors and thus sensorial materials.
Description:
The research and fabrication of material-integrated sensors is a future-oriented scientific field. Physical measurement quantities like strain or temperature can be generated out of a material by applying this approach. This has been already shown for various materials like metals or fiber reinforced plastics. In general the sensors are built up with printed circuit technology or MEMS technology. Both technologies use a substrate to build up different layers which are structured by lithography and etching. This is followed by hybridization where the finished sensor is integrated into the material.
The fabrication of sensorial materials by building up local sensing structure with additive manufacturing like printing is a new approach. This technology is located between printed circuit board technology and MEMS technology, using the advantages of both technologies. In contrast to hybridization, the sensor structures are locally fabricated directly on a semi-finished material, which is then further processed to a structural element.
Aim:
So far little research has been done on additive manufactured sensors for material-integrated sensing. The overall goal of the project is to evaluate the possibility of printing sensors and to integrate them into a material. It will be evaluated in which way printed sensors can be integrated in a material and how these sensors change the macroscopic behavior of the structural element.
