Smart Seal II - Dichtung II

Dichtung II

Research topic

Elastomer-sealing condition monitoring with integrated pressure sensors.

Project description

In the field of mechanical engineering, elastomer materials are required to withstand extreme stress, temperature and chemicals. Typical examples are tires, assembly bearings, air springs and statically and dynamically stressed sealings. The reliability requirements for these components, especially sealings, are very demanding.

Elastomer sealings with integrated pressure sensors will be manufactured to meet this challenge, and to monitor aging of the sealing. Strain gauges were already integrated in previous works. However, the disadvantages of this method is the high cross-sensitivity. To minimize this effect, research in a new project will integrate pressure sensors into the sealings. These are expected to mainly measure compression forces and to be less sensitive to forces from other directions.
