Description

The care sector will face major challenges in the coming years and decades. Due to demographic change, the number of people in need of care will increase significantly. At the same time, the proportion of people over the age of 80 in hospitals is increasing. Nursing care there is becoming more complex and subsequent care at home is also becoming more demanding due to shorter hospitalisation times. The increasing need for care is offset by a decreasing proportion of people in employment who can provide professional care. The shortage of skilled nursing staff will become even more acute. The contribution that digital technologies can make to relieving the burden on professional carers and caring relatives has not yet been fully exploited.

 

"Showrooms" for the professional public

The "Care Innovation Centre", a five-year project funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research with four million euros, is now being launched with the participation of the University of Bremen. It is part of the "Future of Care: Human-Technology Interaction for Practice" programme. The Oldenburg Institute for Information Technology (OFFIS) will coordinate the Care Innovation Centre. Professor Karin Wolf-Ostermann from the Institute of Public Health and Nursing Research at the University of Bremen and Professor Heinz Rothgang from the SOCIUM, Research Centre for Inequality and Social Policy, are significantly involved.

The aim is to establish a competence centre for innovations in care that develops needs-based technical innovations to support care, tests products on the market and from research projects, and makes the results available in laboratories and "showrooms" for the professional public, as well as for training and further education.

Bremen research objectives

While a large number of technological solutions have been developed in recent years, the integration of these developments into everyday care has only been successful in isolated cases. Needs and implementation in the everyday lives of carers have often not been considered from the outset. The aim of the Care Innovation Centre is to incorporate the specific needs of carers and those in need of care into the development processes. Existing reservations and the rejection of increasing technology and digitalisation in care must be considered in the development of technical innovations. How can this be achieved? The central approach is that technology should not replace human care, but on the contrary support it by relieving carers of other activities. The tasks of the Bremen researchers also include evaluating the effectiveness and efficiency of the newly developed technical innovations.

 

Setting up realistic laboratories

As part of the project, four realistic laboratories for different care situations (home care, care in care homes, care in clinics, care service/communication centre) will be set up in which technological developments can be tested on the one hand, but also used for demonstration and further training on the other. As technological innovations also place new qualification requirements on nursing staff, qualification modules for nursing training are also being developed and tested as part of the project.
