Health and well-being depend on a variety of factors that cannot be influenced solely by the health sector and the health care system. These factors are significantly influenced by non-health sectors such as social, economic and environmental sector, as well as transport/mobility and urban development.

This project examines the potential of integrated, small-scale monitoring for better collaboration of different sectors at the administrative level in line with the Health in All Policies approach. The project uses a transdisciplinary approach to develop and test a concept for an integrated small-scale monitoring. The aim of the integrated small-scale monitoring is to support cross-sectoral collaboration and decision-making for sustainable, climate-resilient and health-promoting urban development.

Linking data from sectors like health, environment, social affairs, transport, etc. at a small-scale resolution is an important information base for informed decision-making as part of a Health in All Policies approach. Internationally and nationally, researchers explore possibilities of linking data from different sectors, for example Urban Health Indicator Tools or the Atlas of Environmental Justice in Berlin. This project builds upon these concepts and tests the implementation of existing and new indicators and data integration in Bremen and Bremerhaven.

Moreover, the project integrates local knowledge on the environment and health as well as on social disadvantage and engages the resident population in the process of the concept development and in the definition of relevant indicators.

The Department of Social Epidemiology at the Institute of Public Health and Nursing Research develops this interdisciplinary project in cooperation with the Faculty of Architecture, Civil and Environmental Engineering at Bremen University of Applied Sciences. This project is embedded in the new Research Cluster "Healthy City Bremen".

The University of Bremen, together with the Bremen University of Applied Sciences and the APOLLON University of Applied Sciences, has established this new interdisciplinary Research Cluster as part of the Integrated Health Campus Bremen. Involved researchers are coming from different disciplines from the University of Bremen, specifically from the Institute of Public Health and Nursing Research (IPP) as well as the SOCIUM - Research Center for Inequality and Social Policy and the Leibniz Institute for Prevention Research and Epidemiology - BIPS. Bremen University of Applied Sciences is represented by the researchers from the Faculty of Social Sciences, the Faculty of Architecture, Civil and Environmental Engineering and the Institute for Energy and Circular Economy. The APOLLON University of Applied Sciences participates with researchers from the fields of healthcare, psychology and education. The Research Cluster "Healthy City Bremen" is funded by the Senator for Science and Ports, the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen until the end of 2025.
