This paper examines the social networking site Facebook with a focus on
the phenomenon ‘Dark Patterns”. Dark Patterns are interface elements
designed to deceive or even harm users. To find out if Facebook has
integrated such elements, the authors compared changes in the user
interface since its founding in 2004. Based on their findings, a user
study was conducted to identify different Dark Patterns on Facebook.
The paper was successfully published at CHI2021 as a Late-Breaking Work.
