Alumni 2023 – Great Prospects
What was already good last year will be even better this year. Finally, popular in-person events that had to be cancelled in the past couple of years due to the pandemic can happen again, and without restrictions. This includes our always well-attended summer party, which we plan to celebrate this year on 1 September in the Bremer Heimstiftung’s new socio-ecological residential quarter Stadtleben Ellener Hof. In May, we will discuss the EU's Africa policy as part of Europe Weeks, on 24 June you are invited to university’s Open Campus and at the end of September it's off to Berlin again. Here is a p of all you can look forward to.
After kicking off the new year with our exciting Indian-German "Women in Science" online panel discussion on 2 February, we’re continuing our talk events with two more topics of current significance. On 22 February, we will discuss the future of public service broadcasting with Radio Bremen's Director General Dr. Yvette Gerner. Then on 14 March, we will meet with science experts from Bremen’s parliamentary parties in the plenary chamber of the Bremen Parliament. Two months in advance of Bremen’s parliamentary elections, former rector Prof. Dr.-Ing. Scholz-Reiter will moderate this political discussion on Bremen as a place for science. (More info and registration link below.)
This year we are also participating in the State of Bremen’s Europe Weeks in May. At an online event (in English) in the first half of May (exact date still to be determined), our alumnus Prof Dr Robert Kappel will give a talk on the European Union’s Africa policy and discuss the subject with representatives of our Africa chapters. After many years as a PhD student and research assistant at the University of Bremen, the economist Kappel was a professor at the Institute of African Studies in Leipzig and from 2004 to 2011 he was president of the renowned GIGA in Hamburg, the German Institute for Global and Area Studies, formerly the Deutsches Übersee-Institut.
On 24 June, Uni Bremen invites you to its Open Campus. Under the motto “Open up worlds – Share knowledge", the university’s faculties, institutes and facilities will show what they are made of. In addition to an information programme and pagoda tents, there will once again be a big live performance on stage. The alumni association will be there with its own pagoda and a few surprises.
Our trip to political Berlin will happen this year at the end of September as a three-day tour, at the invitation of the Green Party Member of Parliament Dr. Kirsten Kappert-Gonther. Of course, a visit to the Bundestag is on the itinerary, and there will also be events on health policy and excursions to museums.
"Save the date" is all we can say now for those who want to attend our general meeting, this year on 22 November. Where it will be in Bremen and what interesting add-ons will be on the programme – that we will plan in the next months.
And our very popular one-hour online Alumni Talks will continue this year, with alumni reporting on how the University of Bremen has shaped their career paths. We already have the first speakers lined up for these always exciting presentations, and will announce the exact dates soon.
