Where would we be without engineers? No electricity, no telephones, no cars – the world simply wouldn’t be the same. From the printed book, through the purification of drinking water, up to life-saving medical technology – none of these things could have happened without the ingenuity of engineers. For high-school students (10th to 13th grade) who are interested in becoming engineers, the Faculty of Production Engineering is holding a Weltretter (world savior) information day. The fourth event of its kind will take place on 21st May 2011.
During a day of open lectures and workshops, high-school students will be able to gain an insight into engineering studies at the University of Bremen and what it means to be an engineer. The lectures will deal with topics from the world of production engineering like “Electro-mobility moves – maybe you too!” and “Fast-moving machines with 6 legs”. Visitors to the event will even be able to participate in some hands-on activities in the workshops entitled “Single lens reflex cameras for the rapid optical measurement of components – photogrammetry” or “Laser-chemical micromachining”.
Of course, the high-school students will also be given a taste of “real” student life: students of engineering will be there to relate their experiences. All through the day students, staff and professors of the University of Bremen will be on hand to answer questions and generally help out. World Savior Day will be rounded off with a grill party. More information and details of how to register can be found at www.werdeweltretter.de and also in Facebook under www.facebook.com/werdeweltretter. Admittance is free and if you want to take part you can register now. The deadline for registration is 11th May.
