Barbara Pongratz is a research associate at the Institute of Intercultural and International Studies (InIIS) at the University of Bremen. She is conducting research at InIIS on China's domestic environmental and climate policies as well as climate relations between the European Union and China.

She studied Chinese Studies as well as European and International Law at Freie Universität Berlin and Ludwig-Maximilian-University Munich. Her master's thesis focused on Chinese state-business relations in the context of Chinese digital Silk Road projects. During her studies, Pongratz spent time abroad at Shanghai Tongji University, at Peking University, and in Hong Kong.

Previously, Barbara worked at the Mercator Institute for China Studies (MERICS), where she conducted research on European-Chinese climate diplomacy as well as German China policy. At MERICS, she has also been co-leading a project that focuses on the development of innovative methods for think tank work in Germany and beyond. Barbara also gained working experience in development cooperation in two environmental projects at the Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) in Berlin and Beijing.
