The research project ‘Know:Ur:Heat - Development of knowledge graphs for socio-technical issues in urban heat planning’ focuses on the heat transition in Bremen, the design and support options, and the role of the heat pump. The digital twin of the city of Bremen is used together with technical data, such as building data age class, area, volume, and social data, such as the Sinus-Geo-Milieu data. The focus is on the development and use of two different tools to support regional heat planning. The first tool is an online economic efficiency calculator that compares different heating systems economically. The second tool is based on a knowledge graph and is intended to forecast and visualise the expansion of heat pumps in the state of Bremen for various scenarios. The latter tool is aimed at stakeholders from politics, the energy industry and research and is intended to serve as an aid in municipal heating planning.

Project Description:

In order to achieve our climate target of becoming climate-neutral as the state of Bremen by 2038, we must also make the heat supply more climate-friendly. This includes, but is not limited to, the expansion of district heating networks, including increasing the connected load, and the mass installation of heat pumps. However, the investment costs of installing a heat pump are high compared to conventional heating systems, even if the operating costs are significantly lower. It is therefore necessary to analyse the individual circumstances of citizens so that everyone can make the right decision for themselves. In addition, in many cases higher subsidy rates may be necessary than currently envisaged. Our cost-effectiveness calculator will be there to show the comparison of different heating options. The knowledge graph tool is used to answer other relevant questions that are more relevant to policy and research, such as how to optimise the expansion of district heating networks, taking into account the socio-economic circumstances of a neighbourhood, or which subsidies are needed where, or how much additional electricity would be consumed by the mass installation of heat pumps.
