BIOM – New Building for Biology Department
After 15 months of building, the BIOM had its roofing ceremony at the end of August. Its name is a reference to an actual biome. It will be an attractive clinker construction, in which approximately 1,000 students and more than 100 staff members of the Biology Department in the future will conduct research, teach, and learn.
Its location on campus right next to the MARUM is the first clue for its research focus: molecular and marine biology, dealing with topics such as the consequences of climate change for microorganisms in the oceans that bind carbon dioxide and how specific bacteria can help farmers in sub-Saharan Africa to improve their harvest. Therefore, they are building cutting-edge labs with air-conditioned chambers in which environmental conditions can be controlled and labs for chemical research or wet labs, where samples collected during expeditions can be analyzed. The Bremen senate allocated 45 million Euro for the new building. The entire department is meant to move from the NW2 building to the new one at the latest in the summer semester of 2022. The old NW2 building will then be structurally restored.
