From November to February, the photo exhibition "Embattled Coastal Worlds - Responsibility and Commitment for Coastal Life" will be held at the Haus der Wissenschaft. In this exhibition, the stories of coastal workers, grassroots activists, artists and scientists are told in their personal life worlds in constantly changing coastal spaces. The exhibition presents the north coast of Java, the German North Sea coast as well as coasts of the Indian subcontinent and Ecuador. A joint exhibition of the Leibniz Center for Tropical Marine Research (ZMT) and the Sustainability Research Center (artec) of the University of Bremen as part of the BlueUrban project. In cooperation with the Bremischer Deichverband am rechten Weserufer, Mercy Corps (Indonesia), Dakshin Foundation (India), Mingas por el Mar (Ecuador) and Mangrove Maniacs (Bonaire). With financial support from the German Research Foundation (DFG). The opening will take place on the 3rd of November at 5pm. The exhibition will be on display at the Haus der Wissenschaft from the 4th of November 2022 to the 4th of February 2023.

Coasts are complex and highly dynamic environments that have been the subject of human influence and transformation for centuries. The idea of what constitutes a "good" and livable coast depends on different perspectives: Residents and developers, politicians, artists, activists, investors, and scientists often consider and evaluate coastal regions very differently. These perspectives are increasingly shaped by changes in sea level, but also by processes such as the commercialization and privatization of coasts, their function in international logistics networks, and their ecological value. The exhibition offers an insight into the complexity of coastal areas and the many facets of commitment to coasts on three continents. Stakeholders tell their stories of conflicts and negotiations about the future of their respective dynamic coastal environments. They are as much about social and ecological justice and inclusive change as they are about issues of housing, livelihood, and attachment to a place. Attention is also drawn to the work of women, which often remains in the background in such plans for the future.
