Abstract
The project „MAL - multimodal algebra learning“ is funded in the context of the BMBF proposal of „Erfahrbares Lernen“ („tangible learning“). MAL aims at developing a multimodal algebra learning system, which integrates the natural modalities to facilitate learning. The project addresses two major problems in math education: the learners have difficulties developing a proper understanding of algebra and the underlying concepts as well as the heterogeneity of classes impede the teachers efforts in providing an individual learning environment. The core of the multimodal algebra learning system will be tangible elements which can be used to explain various algebra concepts e.g. by acting as numbers or variables (comparable to the Algebra Tiles which are well known in the US).
