IPP scientists represented at 34th Alzheimer Europe Conference

Strategies for optimising urban development for dementia-friendly cities and results of the DemWG study on social health and quality of life

From October 8 to 10, 2024, Alzheimer Europe and Alzheimer Switzerland Svizzera invited people to the 34th Alzheimer Europe Conference, which took place in Geneva.
Two researchers from the Department of Nursing Science Research at the Institute for Public Health and Nursing Research (IPP) were also there. In her presentation "What experiences do people living with dementia and their carers have with the neighborhood-built environment and what effects do they have on social health? – Results of the DEN-HB Study", Janissa Altona discussed actions for urban optimization for dementia-friendly cities, which should enable people living with dementia to find their way around urban areas better and thus be able to lead a self-determined life for longer. In addition, Julia Misonow presented a scientific poster entitled "Improving the quality of life and social participation of people living with dementia in shared-housing arrangements - Results of the DemWG study". Both contributions offered congress visitors the opportunity to find out more about the research approaches and to talk directly with the scientists. As part of Janissa Altona's lecture and study, five interviews were conducted with people living with dementia and their relatives. In the half-hour interviews, those affected were able to talk about their experiences with urban development and social health.
Both members of the IPP received significant support from the head of nursing science research, Prof. Dr. Karin Wolf-Ostermann. The conference appearance underlines the commitment of the three researchers to the international exchange of scientific findings and to their practice-oriented implementation.
