Successful final symposium of the Master's programme "Public Health - Health Care, Health Economics and Management" at the University of Bremen

Students develop solutions for practice: the Bremen Public Health degree programme combines research, teaching and transfer in three-semester research projects.

On January 31, 2025, the students presented the research projects that form the core of the Master's degree and their results to the cooperation partners and the interested (specialist) public in the House of Science. Over the past three semesters, the Master's students have worked on developing solutions for healthcare problems that exist in reality and were handed over to them by the cooperation partners. During the symposium, the progress of the individual projects was explained, from the initial inventory to the finished intervention concept, and questions from the plenary were answered in detail. Following the presentations, the project partners also took the opportunity to give an outlook on the implementation of the concepts presented. The event was planned and moderated by the students themselves, and the symposium was rounded off with speeches by the lecturers and project supervisors from the University of Bremen, Prof. Ansgar Gerhardus, Sinah Evers and Prof. Heinz Rothgang. During the break and the get-together at the end of the event, there was room for lively exchanges, discussions and nice conversations.

This year, the student research projects dealt with the topics of emergency care and obstetrics. The following projects were presented on the topic of emergency care:

Emergency or on-call? Optimal patient management in Bremen (in cooperation with the Bremen Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians): The project identifies new management options for outpatient emergency patients* from emergency departments to the outpatient care sector.

Ready for life: Strengthening health literacy in secondary schools (in cooperation with AOK Bremen/Bremerhaven): As part of the research project, a training concept was developed to strengthen the navigational health literacy of pupils* at secondary schools in Bremen.

The following projects were presented by the students on the topic of obstetrics:

Ensuring one-to-one care in inpatient obstetrics (in cooperation with the Hebammenverband Niedersachsen e.V.): This involves developing a concept for how one-to-one care for women giving birth could be implemented from concept to practice.

Prevention of premature births (in cooperation with hkk Handelskrankenkasse): The project is developing a care contract to prevent the risk factors of iron deficiency, bacterial vaginosis and diabetes for premature birth.

The students would like to thank all participants.

The final events of the MA Public Health - Health Care, Economics and Management take place annually at the beginning of the year and have become an insider tip among all those interested in the practical application of public health. It should be emphasized that this year's very well-attended event was organized entirely by the students themselves, who were also able to apply their excellent skills in the field of science communication.
