The department focuses on various topics of global health, including complex global relationships between the determinants of health and disease, as well as the promotion of young talents and capacity development in research and teaching, in Bremen and as well as in countries of the Global South.
The establishment and deepening of local relationships and networks and joint applications with partners in third countries for appropriate infrastructure development and initial research projects on the main topics of climate change and global tobacco control are central tasks of the professorship during the first years.
Prof. Dr. Melanie Böckmann received her doctorate in 2015 from the University of Bremen with a thesis on the evaluation, including assessment of aspects of justice, of heat adaptation in Europe and Japan. After scientific stations in Düsseldorf as a postdoc and in Bielefeld as a junior professor as well as research stays in South Asia and the UK, Melanie Böckmann returned to the University of Bremen in 2021 and has been representing the Global Health department since February 2023.
