Prof. Dr Gabriele Bolte gave two presentations at the 6th Bremen Poverty Conference on 3 March 2025

In her contributions, the Bremen health scientist spoke on the topics of environmental justice and climate adaptation strategies, in particular heat action plans, and their significance for the living conditions of people affected by poverty

In her presentation on environmental justice, Gabriele Bolte presented the action-oriented model and the implications for urban and neighborhood development.

In her second presentation, she commented on the Bremen & Bremerhaven Heat Action Plan with regard to its potential as a municipal instrument for climate justice.

From the report by Radio Bremen:

Social epidemiologist Gabriele Bolte said that Bremen's heat action plan, which was published in the fall, is an example of what a politically sensible approach could look like with regard to the coming climate crisis and poverty. She was involved in the heat action plan - and now expects Bremen to implement and further develop the plan in the coming years. In her view, the special thing about the heat action plan is that “health equity is taken into account in all measures.” The plan aims to achieve more or less equal living conditions for rich and poor, at least in terms of health. With regard to the health consequences of heat, this could be measures for higher building quality in social housing or programs such as “Housing First”, which aim to improve the situation of homeless people.

“Of course, this is just the beginning, but it's a very good one,” says Bolte. There is a great deal of support for the heat action plan. The measures described therein for climate-adapted urban development, for example with the help of socially balanced green space management, could help to reduce inequalities. This is precisely the best long-term strategy for the entire population, both with regard to the coming climate crisis and in the fight against poverty and to promote health.
