Prof. Dr. Gabriele Bolte elected into the ARL - Academy for Territorial Development in the Leibniz Association

Presentation at the general meeting on November 21, 2024, in Würzburg

Prof. Dr. Gabriele Bolte was elected as a member of the Academy for ten years due to her professional qualifications in public health research and her expertise in the field of sustainable and health-promoting urban development. She introduced herself at the members' meeting on 21.11.2024 in Würzburg.
The ARL - for Territorial Development is a social research infrastructure institution within the Leibniz Association and acts as the professional voice of spatial science research and planning practice. It facilitates cooperation and networking between spatial science research and planning practice and pools inter- and transdisciplinary expertise on current issues of sustainable spatial development. The aim of the ARL is sustainable spatial development that is socially and economically just, ecologically responsible and future-oriented. The aim is to identify ways and means of making cities, rural areas and regions liveable and resilient for all people in an action- and solution-oriented manner (see www.arl-net.de/en).
In 2020, Gabriele Bolte was already a member of the ARL's ad hoc working group “Pandemic and Spatial Development”, which assessed the spatially relevant effects of the COVID-19 pandemic in a critical, multidisciplinary and integrative manner. The position paper, in which the working group provides recommendations for action for municipalities and regions, state and federal institutions and the EU for a sustainable approach to events that are difficult to predict, such as a pandemic, is available online (https://www.arl-net.de/de/projekte/pandemie-und-raumentwicklung).
Since 2022, Gabriele Bolte has been involved in the ARL's international working group “Urban Planning for Health Equity”. The working group takes an interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary perspective on the possibilities of urban planning to achieve social equity in health opportunities in urban areas. The overarching goal is to identify ways to achieve a sustainable, resilient, climate-friendly and healthy city. The working group includes experts from science and practice from the fields of spatial planning, urban development, urban studies, architecture, public health, social work, municipal and regional administration and the WHO European Healthy Cities Network from seven European countries (https://www.arl-international.com/activities/urban-planning-health-equity).
