Public health in Germany: structures, dynamics, and ways forward

Bremen health scientists publish health policy article in the Lancet

In a health policy review published on March 4 in the renowned journal Lancet Public Health, Prof. Hajo Zeeb (Leibniz Institute for Prevention Research and Epidemiology - BIPS) and Prof. Ansgar Gerhardus (Institute of Public Health and Nursing Research - IPP) and their co-authors have analyzed the status and prospects of public health in Germany. The core problems described are a lack of control without a public health strategy, too little prevention with too much expensive repair medicine and the influence of strong lobby interests. According to the authors, solutions include the development of a strong public health identity, the creation of a national public health strategy and the courage to deal decisively with commercial interests that are opposed to the health of the population.

This Health Policy is structured along the essential public health operations (EPHOs).
