"Future Day" at CVT

Pupils extract their own orange oil

On this year's "Future Day", two pupils from Bremen had the opportunity to get a taste of real laboratory work - in the truest sense of the word. As part of an exciting hands-on project, they were able to lend a hand in the laboratories of the Chemical Process Engineering (CVT) working group and extract the essential oil from orange peel using steam distillation.

Under expert guidance, the young people not only learned about the structure of the distillation apparatus, but also the chemical background to the process. Particularly impressive: the moment when the first drops of fresh orange oil became visible - and the whole laboratory was enveloped in a fruity, citrusy scent.

With activities like this, CVT shows how practical and fascinating process engineering can be - and at the same time awakens an interest in scientific careers at an early age.
