Prof Benjamin Schüz (IPP): Prevention and health promotion

Benjamin Schüz shows how relevant prevention and health promotion are in view of the current challenges in the healthcare system. A contribution to the Health Briefing series, a joint production of the Health Sciences Research Centre and BIPS

Prevention often still plays a subordinate role in the German healthcare system, although targeted preventive measures can counteract non-communicable diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and cancer. In the new Health Briefing, Prof Dr Benjamin Schüz (Institute of Public Health and Nursing Research (IPP), University of Bremen) explains that effective prevention could increase the life expectancy and quality of life of the population and relieve the burden on the healthcare system. The measures start at an individual level, e.g. by helping people to stop smoking, while at the same time focussing on the population level. They include, for example, non-smoker protection as well as sugar and alcohol regulation. However, such measures are only partially or barely included in the parties' 2025 election programmes. However, such programmes would potentially be accepted by the population. This should be utilised by the new federal government to sustainably improve health at population level.
