75 years ago, the Basic Law entered into force. It represents the fundamental values and principles of our society, is guaranty of the inalienable human dignity of each individual, powerful basic rights, social security and social equity, independent courts and the democratic and federal order of our society. Under Basic Law, German reunification as well as the path towards European unity were successfully pursued. 75 years of democracy, freedom and social rule of law are a success story and reason to celebrate.
After the experiences of crises of recent years and in view of the growing influence of populist parties, the 75th anniversary of the Basic Law is also an opportunity and reason for a critical assessment. After the finance and the public debt crisis, the migration and the corona crisis, the intensifying climate crisis and a war in the middle of Europe, is the Basic Law still in good shape? How about the debt brake and climate change, the role of the Basic law in European law or the introduction of a general compulsory service?
We would like to discuss these and other questions with you on 6 December, 3:30 p.m., within the framework of the 5th Bremen Talks on the Constitutional State at Forum am Domshof 26, 28195 Bremen.
