Legal Education

Studies are structured on the basis of the three pillars civil law, public law and criminal law. In each study semester, different fields of law, pertaining to these pillars, are taught in lectures, accompanying workgroups and tutorials.

The legal education with all its components is to provide the future jurist with the knowledge and skills required in legal practice, in the courts, in administration and in consulting.

The university course of studies, followed by the First Law Examination (formerly First State Examination), the subsequent two-year legal traineeship and the Second Law Examination (formerly Second State Examination) lead to the "qualification for judicial office". Having completed their studies, graduates can follow a range of career paths, for example

  • as lawyers
  • in the judiciary
  • in public administration
  • in the private sector, e.g. in legal and personnel departments of enterprises as well as in banks or insurance companies
  • in consultancies
  • in associations
