Producing and delivering audio and video

The tools described below are for audio and video production on your own computer.
Podcasts with Audacity and Co.
Audacity is a free software for recording and editing audio content and is ideal for creating your own audio podcasts. Recordings can be recorded on the hard disk and edited and mixed on as many tracks as desired. Audio effects such as noise filters, equalisers or compressors can be added, playback speeds can be changed and format conversions can be carried out. The programme is freely available for Windows, Mac OS and Linux.
Alternatively, you can also use corresponding apps on your smartphone or tablet, most of which are already available. Organise your audio contributions (ideally no longer than 10 minutes) e.g. as playlists in topic folders in Stud.IP or send your students short audio messages via "Message to all".

Screencasts
There are a variety of options and tools for simultaneously recording the screen, your webcam and audio commentary. We present some of them here.
Opencast Studio allows you to record your screen, a single window or your webcam image in a very simple way and without installing software. Presentations and lectures can thus be easily offered to students independent of time and place. The system is hosted on the servers of the ZMML and can be accessed both in Stud.IP via the Opencast plug-in and via an external website. With the help of the Opencast editor you can edit your recordings uploaded to Stud.IP and, for example, also adjust metadata such as the title. Open Broadcaster Software (OBS) is a free software for recording and streaming content. Users can arrange various content such as images, videos, texts, screen shares and webcams on a free surface and compile them into individual scenes. OBS offers the possibility of recording simple screencasts as well as more complex scenarios with many working materials. The programme is available for the operating systems Windows, MacOS and Linux.

Powerpoint allows simple recording including audio commentary and, since Powerpoint 2019, their webcam. So if you want to annotate your PowerPoint presentations and produce them as videos, you already have everything you need at hand.

Recording on MAC computers is no problem thanks to integrated functions and pre-installed software (Quicktime).

Screen recordings on the iPad or iPhone are (from iOS11 or newer) very easily possible (siehe Apple-Support). The built-in microphone can be used for audio commentary. This option is particularly useful when using a stylus (Apple Pencil) in a note-taking app to clarify facts (e.g. calculation methods) as on a blackboard. The resulting video in mp4 format can be edited on the iPad with the on-board tools of "Photos" or with an app like iMovie e.g. to trim the recording (cut off the area at the beginning and/or end). The files become very large and should be compressed with a tool like Handbrake.
Apple-Support
Camtasia is a commercial software by TechSmith specialised in screencasts and educational videos, which also offers extensive editing and cutting possibilities. Few licences are available at the ZMML as well as in some departments.

Video editing
There are a variety of products for video editing. For the computer, these include Shotcut (Download), Kdenlive (Download) or the old, but very easy-to-use Windows Movie Make (Download); ; for the smartphone or tablet, for example, iMovie (for iOS) or VLLO (for Android, for iOS).You can find numerous instructions for all these tools on YouTube.
For Opencast videos in Stud.IP the Opencast editor is the easiest way to edit them. (You can find an instruction for the editor here)
Video Upload in Stud.IP via the Opencast Plugin
With the Opencast plugin you can upload lecture recordings and other videos to our OpenCast server and integrate them into Stud.IP. With the help of the Opencast editor, you can edit your recordings uploaded to Stud.IP and, for example, also adjust metadata such as the title. As the videos are processed and made available on our external OpenCast server, the video upload via this plugin has no negative impact on the performance of the Stud.IP system.
