BIG Events

From November 2024 to April 2025, a series of events will address oppression, racism and sexism in academia. These events aim to raise awareness, empower, and make these issues visible.

They are intended for women, trans, inter and non-binary researchers, as well as those in science management or with a general interest.

 

All events will be held in English.

On April 24, 2024, the University of Bremen held its first university-wide action day against discrimination ‘Aware Together’. This event featured a variety of activities and formats inviting participants to engage with topics of diversity and anti-discrimination. These events provided spaces for reflection, discussion, and networking among university members, students, staff, and lecturers alike.

In this context, the project BIG organized a focused discussion for women, trans*, inter*, and non-binary international researchers about the challenges of attaining professorships at German universities, based on a recent DAAD study. Julia Dambuk visually captured outcomes of this discussion.

Visualizing the Journey: International Researchers en route to Professorship in German Universities

Engage in a focused discussion for women* international researchers on challenges to professorship at German universities, drawing from a recent DAAD study, with outcomes visually captured by Julia Dambuck.

This event is organised by Project BIG (Bridge between Internationalisation and Gender) and is hosted at Bremen International Graduate School of Social Sciences (BIGSSS).

An Information Workshop for International Graduate Women (all Faculties)

What are my plans after graduation and is a doctorate something for me? Many international graduate women play with the idea of starting a PhD after their master’s degree in Germany, but are unsure how to proceed.

If you feel addressed, this workshop is for you! It will provide guidance, support and practical information to help you navigate the start of your PhD journey.

It will offer:

  • Orientation and the first steps towards a doctorate
  • Information on funding opportunities and related academic paths
  • Practical information on the structures and processes at University of Bremen
  • Networking opportunity with other international graduate women.

On 13.09.2023 Project BIG in collaboration with the Alumni Association - India Chapter, organised an online panel discussion on impacts of gender, socio-economic status, immigration, ethnicity, and race on the professional and social mobility of Indian women in academia.

We heard and discussed success stories, challenges, gender and educational background interactions, and the need for supporting structures from the four panellists.

Panellists:

Ajita Srivastava, PhD
Dr. Ajita Srivastava is a postdoctoral fellow at Bremen International Graduate School of Social Sciences (BIGSSS), Constructor University, Germany. She did her PhD in culture and psychology. She worked on rural-urban differences in decision making due to cultural, market and economic factors in India. Her research interests include applied psychology, culture and psychology, developing countries, decision making and cooperation. She did her Bachelors and Masters in Allahabad University, India.


Gitanjali Dharmadhikari, PhD
Gitanjali has been working in the field of biomedical, clinical innovation, management and healthcare, for the past 13+ years. Her journey in academic research started at University of Bremen where she did her Masters in Biochemistry and Molecular biology, followed by PhD in novel therapeutic targets in Diabetes. During her postdoctoral years as Co-principle investigator at Hubrecht Institute for Developmental biology and stem cell research, she was instrumental in the development of ground breaking, state of the art technology of single cell RNA sequencing to zoom more into the diseased cell states and properties of stem cells. To broaden the application of this technology, she ventured into oncology research at speciality hospital for children’s cancer, Princess Maxima Centre. Currently she is working at Philips Research, bringing her biomedical clinical expertise, business development acumen and management strategies into a more commercial context, ensuring innovations that bring value in the healthcare domain and make positive impact on millions of lives.
 

Ketki Tulpule, PhD
Ketki is a life sciences professional with a deep understanding of the Pharma/Biotech/CRO value chain and rich experience in industry as well as academia. She has worked in diverse profiles ranging from researcher in a lab to providing labspaces for other researchers. She is adept in international business development and strategy for pharma services and products. She is currently involved in building and growing vibrant bioclusters in India as a part of Rx Propellant, a leading life sciences infrastructure platform. Prior to that, she was associated with the Pharma Analytics division at Excelra which provided AI-based drug discovery and development solutions to pharma companies across the globe. She studied Master’s in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Bremen and continued as a doctoral student to be awarded Ph.D. in Neurochemistry. This was followed by two years of post-doctoral research associateship at IISER Pune, India in the field of Behavioural Neurobiology.


Tanya Keni
Tanya Keni is a cross-cultural psychologist, an Indian classical dancer, a migrant, and a woman who enjoys learning about individuals in different cultural contexts. She holds a master's degree in applied psychology from the University of Mumbai, India and a bachelor's degree in psychology from Goa University, India. Her scholarly interests lie in cross-cultural influences, migration, values, and well-being. She is currently pursuing her doctoral studies at the Bremen International Graduate School of Social Sciences with a focus on acculturation and value adaptation of educational migrants from honor to dignity cultures.

Creating a BIG space: Building Alliances Amongst International Women Scientists

The "mobile space" is a functional artwork developed together with artist Veronica Andres, to address mobility, which is an essential part of international scientist’s lives. This space does not only attempt to depict their mobile lives more so it is created to offer space for creative ideas, exchange of expertise and experiences of working, studying and living in Bremen. An innovative way of re-claiming space for encounters that will foster the visibility of international women scientists, build networks and solidarity to support their professional mobility in science.

Come Along to the Opening Event of the Mobile Space, along with a screen printing workshop on 12th of June from 12:00 – 13:00 at GW2 Boulevard area. (entrance of the GW2 Café)
