Tutoring Program Counters Initial Fears

Production Engineering is very often the subject of first choice for school leavers. However, the teaching staff in the department has to face up to the problem that freshers often lack much of the foundation knowledge needed to study successfully. Their initial enthusiasm can quickly turn into frustration, affecting students and instructional staff alike.

In an attempt to remedy the situation, last winter semester saw the launch of a MINT project called “Production Engineering from the start!” Prof. Colombi Ciacchi, the Faculty Dean, explains “At the heart of the project is a tutoring program. A group of advanced students – twelve in all – act as tutors. They provide ongoing support to fixed groups of first-semester students, helping them to cope with initial difficulties. The goal is to take away some of the fear attached to foundation studies in mathematics, physics and electrical engineering.” More than half of the freshers have already taken advantage of the new offer. A short film produced by ZMML shows how the program works and the kind of topics dealt with.
