Information for Applicants
(Senior) Lecturer / (Senior) Researcher: Is this something for me?
Are you looking for a permanent position in the academic mid-level sector that allows you to work independently in research and teaching? Then a position as a (Senior) Researcher or (Senior) Lecturer at the University of Bremen could be just right for you. The job categories (Senior) Researcher and (Senior) Lecturer offer early career academics a permanent position in the academic mid-level sector next to and independent of the professorship.
Information on the Job Category
The job categories (Senior) Researcher and (Senior) Lecturer are positions in the academic mid-level sector, i.e. next to the professorship. (Senior) Researchers and (Senior) Lecturers are independent in research and teaching. The positions are assigned to the faculty not to a professorship. The superior is the Dean of the faculty in which the position is based.
The job category can have a focus on either teaching (Lecturer or Senior Lecturer) or research (Researcher or Senior Researcher). The focus is determined when the position is approved and is based on the personnel structure plans of the discipline in which the position is situated. A change of focus at a later point in time is not intended. The respective focus on teaching or research is also reflected in the teaching obligations that come with the position (see teaching obligations of (Senior) Researcher and (Senior) Lecturer).
The job categories (Senior) Researcher/(Senior) Lecturer are positions in the academic mid-level sector. They do not provide a career path to a professorship. Senior Lecturers and Senior Researchers should be qualified for the appointment to a professorship and can apply for advertised positions.
With the amendment of the Higher Education Act of the State of Bremen in June 2017, the legislator enshrined the new job categories in law. The Academic Senate of the University of Bremen adopted the Selection and Evaluation Regulations for the new job categories on February 21, 2018.
In accordance with § 24 Higher Education Act of the State of Bremen, the recruitment requirements are a completed university degree and, as a rule, a doctorate. The respective job advertisement will detail further requirements regarding academic qualifications.
Researchers and Lecturers are employed on a temporary basis. Due to the initially fixed-term employment, Lecturers and Researchers must have sufficient qualification periods in accordance with the Academic Fixed-Term Contract Act (WissZeitVG).
According to the Teaching Obligations and Proof of Teaching Ordinance (LVNV), the teaching obligation is 8 hours per semester for Lecturers and 4 hours per semester for Researchers. After a successful evaluation and the transfer to a permanent position, the teaching obligation increases to 12 hours per semester for Senior Lecturers and 9 hours per semester for Senior Researchers.
The salary scale during the tenure phase is EG 14 TV-L. After successful evaluation, the salary will be paid according to EG 15 TV-L.
(Senior) Researchers and (Senior) Lecturers do not receive any personnel resources. The respective faculty provides access to the necessary infrastructure and other resources. Details will be negotiated between the University Executive Board and the faculty during the process of approving the position. They can be documented in the target agreement.
