Exchange students at Bremen University: ERASMUS or Exchange outside of Europe

You are studying at one of Bremen University’s 500 partner universities in Europe and worldwide and would like to spend one or two semesters studying here in Bremen?

In that case, you can apply as a visiting exchange student under the Erasmus program (for partner universities in the EU) or via one of our international partnership programs (for partner universities outside Europe).

In order to secure an exchange placement at Bremen University, you must first apply through your home university (usually through the International Office). The application procedure is then handled by your home university.

Your home university informs the International Office at Bremen University of your nomination. Following this you will receive an e-mail from us containing important information about the online application procedure at the University of Bremen (done through the Mobility Online databank).

It is important that we receive your valid e-mail address once you have been nominated ― and don’t forget to regularly check your mails because all important information is communicated electronically.

This will allow enough time to prepare the necessary documents for the visa application.

Important Documents

Once you have submitted your online application, you must upload the following documents in the database of  the International Office:

  • a signed and stamped copy of the online application form (2 pages)
  • a copy of your enrolment certificate

You can find an overview of the courses offered in the respective study programs in the current course catalog of the University of Bremen. Most courses are taught in German, some in English.

In order to view the list of courses offered in English, please select your field of study and degree first and then select the language option “English spoken only”.

For assistance in selecting the right courses and more detailed questions, you should contact the respective faculty coordinators. These are the ERASMUS Departmental Coordinators for Erasmus students. Students coming from our partner universities outside the European Union should contact the International Cooperations Coordinators. The lists with the contact data of the coordinators can be downloaded on the right side of page.

You can discuss any questions about the Learning Agreement with the representatives of the respective study program.

For the most part, the study programs at the University of Bremen are taught in German. Only a few study programs are taught in English. It is therefore extremely important that your German is already good enough to take up studies at the beginning of the semester for which you enroll. Whether the language of instruction is German or English, we strongly recommend that your level of proficiency is at least B2 (according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).

In the event that your language level is insufficient at the time of application, you should make every effort to improve it before you come to Bremen. The University of Bremen offers several intensive German language courses during the summer break and also during the orientation weeks for exchange students. The Center for Foreign Languages (SZHB) also offers a wide range of courses.
