Co-Host: Prof. Dr. Jonathan Lerga
Research Training Project: An IoT-based Federated Learning Model for Personal Air Pollution Exposure Monitoring
Abtract: Air pollution is a leading global health threat, responsible for approximately seven million premature deaths in 2014, and projected to become the primary cause of environment-related deaths by 2050. Individuals are exposed to pollutant levels exceeding outdoor pollution by over 100 times, posing risks to well-being and economic productivity. This study proposes a sensor fusion framework leveraging the Internet of Things (IoT) and Machine Learning to monitor Personal Air Pollution Exposure (PAPE) in indoor and outdoor environments. Key innovations include calibrating low-cost air quality sensors using Enhanced Long Short-Term Memory (ELSTM) and Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) techniques, deploying a robust IoT-based sensor network, and validating the system through a proof-of-concept study in Bremen, Germany. The project aims to deliver a cost-effective, reliable solution for monitoring and mitigating air pollution exposure.
Faculty 3: Mathematik und Informatik
Host: Prof. Dr. Dr. Bjoern Niehaves
Co-Host University: University of Antwerp
Co-Host: Prof. Dr. Koen Verhoest
Research Training Project: RESPECTech - Responsible Procurement Practices for the GovTech Ecosystem in European Cities
Abtract: GovTech is driving the transformation of public services through solutions designed by external partners. However, challenges such as trust and unclear rules permeate this ecosystem of startups and non-state actors.
Faculty 5: Geosciences
Host: Prof. Dr. Marta Pérez-Gussinyé
Co-Host University: University of Cyprus
Co-Host: Prof. Dr. Panos Papanastasiou
Research Training Project: Characterizing H2 natural reservoirs At Rifted Margins (CH2ARM)
Abtract: Natural hydrogen, produced during the formation of rifted margins, can become a key resource for the energy transition, although its processes and reservoirs are still not well understood. CH2ARM project aims to estimate natural hydrogen production at two European rifted margins using seismic data and numerical modeling to identify and evaluate reservoirs of this emerging energy resource.
Faculty 12: Pedagogy and Educational Sciences, Intercultural Education
Host: Prof. Dr. phil. Yasemin Karakaşoğlu
Co-Host University: University of Rijeka
Co-Host: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Adrijana Martinović
Research Training Project: International students’ loneliness and social engagement in European university cities
Abtract: International students face higher risks of loneliness, threatening their human security and wellbeing. This study explores factors and policies fostering social connections and wellbeing among international students in Germany and Croatia, aiming to enhance student support and build cohesive urban communities.
