German Language Skills for Degree Programs

Without a good command of the German language, you will not be able to study successfully in Germany and at the University of Bremen. It is therefore a requirement for enrollment in all undergraduate programs offered by the University that you can prove you have sufficient knowledge of German at least at C1 level. There are a few study programs for which lower levels are sufficient. On this page we have compiled how you can prove the respective levels.

The following language certificates are accepted:

TestDaF – “Test of German as a Foreign Language”

In TestDaF, a total of 16 points are required for admission to a degree program at the University of Bremen, and you must achieve at least 3 points in all four parts of the examination. More information about TestDaF can be found under www.testdaf.de.

Goethe Certificate C1 and C2

The Goethe C1 Certificate is recognized for admission to degree programs at the University of Bremen. Also accepted for admission to a degree program at the University of Bremen are:

  • “Goethe C2 Certificate"
  • The Goethe Institute’s “Zentrale Oberstufenprüfung” (ZOP)
  • The “Kleine Deutsche Sprachdiplom” (KDS) from the Goethe Institute
  • The “Große Deutsche Sprachdiplom“ (GDS) from the Goethe Institute

Assessment test in the frame of Preparatory Studies

After successfully attending Preparatory Studies, you can study at a university or a university of applied sciences. The "German" section of the exam passed in the frame of Preparatory Studies is recognized as proof of language competence and is accepted for admission to a degree program at the University of Bremen.

"telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule"

telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule tests university-based German language skills at an advanced level and is also accepted for admission to degree programs at the University of Bremen.

"Deutsches Sprachdiplom"

The DSD II - "Deutsches Sprachdiplom der Kultusministerkonferenz Stufe II" - tests German language skills at level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages GeR.

DSH - "German Language Examination for University Entrance"

In the DSH you need the overall result “DSH-2” or “DSH-3” for admission to a degree program at the University of Bremen. The overall result “DSH-1” is not sufficient. The University of Bremen does not offer DSH, but you can take the test at many universities in Germany. Information can be obtained from the individual institutions.

Exemption from proof of language competence in German

An application to be exempted from supplying a language certificate can be submitted to the "Sprachenzentrum Bremen". However, such exemptions are rarely possible. An example of an exemption from the language test ist a degree in German awarded in your home country. If the score of the TestDaF exam is below 16, exemption is not possible.
