Sugar kelp

Oceans cover two thirds of the Earth's surface. They play a central role in the climate system, as this is where a large proportion of CO₂ storage and global oxygen production takes place.

THE EARTH DOESN'T NEED US, BUT WE NEED THE EARTH

Seaweeds such as sugar kelp play a major role in this. The brown algae forms "forests under water" - so-called kelp forests. The oxygen production in these important ecosystems is comparable to that of the Amazon rainforest. In her doctoral thesis, biologist Nora Diehl investigated the consequences of ocean warming on kelp.

Deutschland-Stipendium

Student movements have always been drivers of social change, but today the standard length of study often means that there is little time for social engagement. Nevertheless, there are still ambitious students.

PROMOTING YOUNG TALENT IS RECOGNITION AND APPRECIATION

The Deutschlandstipendium regularly supports particularly high-achieving students. It also recognises voluntary work and special circumstances. In addition to financial support, an accompanying programme offers opportunities for personal development and networking.

From the archives to the stage

Historical files often conceal moving human destinies. Since 2007, historian Dr Eva Schöck-Quinteros' award-winning project "From the files to the stage", which combines research with dramaturgy, has played a pioneering role in communicating history.

CAN WE LEARN FROM HISTORY?

The bremer shakespeare company brings the story behind the original documents to life for the audience in staged readings. The play "No refuge. Nowhere." deals with the voyage of the MS St. Louis, which was supposed to rescue 937 Jews from the Nazis in 1939 and take them to Cuba.

Changing Dress Codes

Cheap fashion and new collections every week in the global North are inextricably linked to the exploitation of people and nature in the production countries of the global South.

HOW CAN JUSTICE BE ACHIEVED IN A GLOBALISED WORLD?

The "Fair Fashion" movement wants to put an end to these conditions in the fashion industry: in 2019, Bremen students organised their "Transparency Game" on "Fashion Revolution Day" on the market square in the city centre. With this attention-grabbing campaign, they playfully informed passers-by about the conditions under which their latest item of clothing was produced.

Endowed professorship for imaging diagnostics

Thanks to technologies such as MRI and ultrasound, we can now take a look inside the body without any radiation exposure and save lives through early diagnosis.

NEW IMPETUS THROUGH ENDOWED PROFESSORSHIPS

The Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Medicine MEVIS, which is closely linked to the university and is one of the world's leading research centres, conducts research into image- and data-supported early diagnosis.
Prof Dr Matthias Günther came to Bremen in 2009 as an endowed professor and is now researching contrast agent-free breast cancer diagnostics.

Bremer Universitätsgespräche

The event series has been bringing together representatives from science, politics and business to discuss socially relevant topics since 1988.

THE FUTURE IS DIGITAL

Through presentations by researchers and moderated discussions, the event opens up new perspectives for all participants every year, especially for a broader public.
In 2021, the topic of "Data Science" was highlighted in its many aspects and its significance for different disciplines.

I·SEE – VISUAL PROTHESIS

To enable blind people to see again, researchers in Bremen are learning the language of the brain. They are investigating which signals are required in the nerve cells of the brain in order to be able to see something.

HEALTH RESEARCH FOR A BETTER QUALITY OF LIFE

Dr Udo Ernst and Dr David Rotermund want to use the results to develop a computer-brain interface: A prosthesis implanted in the brain will generate artificial signals at the nerve cells and trigger visual impressions. This difficult project is still in its infancy, but raises hopes of significantly improving the quality of life of the visually impaired.

School digitalisation

You only really understand something when you can explain it yourself. In line with this motto, pupils in Bremen were allowed to get creative themselves in the cooperation project "Learning together by explaining with digital media" by using tablets to create explanatory videos on lesson content.

PUPILS ARE THE RESEARCHERS OF TOMORROW

A concept developed by Prof Karsten Wolf and students for digitally supported teaching and learning in schools was applied, which promotes a deeper understanding of maths and the self-confidence of learners.

Helga Grubitzsch-Preis

Hopefully it will be a long time before we know the name of the first young woman who will graduate from high school and go to university with the help of the Helga Grubitzsch Prize, and before we can report on the reference project of the Grubitzsch Foundation, which has yet to be established, because Helga Grubitzsch has decided in favour of an estate foundation.
